Synopsis: One Way Ticket follows the new life of Jean-Pierre Ntegyeye and Isaiah Bahati after spending 20 years living in a refugee camp in Uganda. After resettling in the US with some help from a United Nations migration agency their dream has come true, but they haven’t forgotten the plight of those left behind.

Block 8 – ALFRIQUE LENS – 2 pm (CST)

Synopsis:  A painter who lacks inspiration, Moussa cannot understand her neighbor from across the street. In the day she appears to him veiled, and in the night she reveals herself completely. But, she may well be his new muse.

Synopsis: A foreigner in Ghana gets an assignment from his gang to find kids for a risky job that will take place later that evening. While spending the day with two energetic children, Prince and Matilda, he starts to question his decision and how it will affect their lives.

Synopsis: Halima, a Sudanese henna painter goes to Basma’s, a young Egyptian bride to prepare her for her wedding: under the eyes of her daughter Ward, the encounter between the two women grows from complicity to suddenly unveiled tensions.

The Film introduces Taino (24), a passionate young student who lives in Nassau, Bahamas. Taino is frequently found daydreaming and lost in thought despite the gorgeous backdrop of paradise. As someone who always has his head in the clouds, he struggles to find his place in the world. And though he tries to build relationships, his only real friend is Elina. Elina (23) is a bubbly, outspoken islander whose mantra in life is to be present in all moments. She never rushes to get anywhere on time and stops whenever possible to admire the beauty around her.

Synopsis: Desperate teenagers ignite a gang war and narcotics investigation when they stumble upon a botched robbery and help themselves to the spoils.

Though each person’s pathway to success is unique, they all share a common purpose and strength in overcoming often racially-based obstacles to succeed at the highest level in their respective fields. Tied together through their shared achievement – recognition from the Harry Jerome Awards – these incredible people paint a diverse and compelling portrait of excellence in the Cool Black North.

Synopsis: In 2019, after months of protests across Sudan, the military removed thirty-year dictator Omar al-Bashir and cracked down in a violent fashion on the civilian.



  1.  OURS TO TELL

Synopsis: Without shame and without fear “Ours to Tell” depicts four people who share their stories and walk in their truth. By owning the lives they choose, what unfolds is an unfiltered and poetic demonstration of how the right to access abortion acts as a dynamic turning point in an individual’s journey to freedom and self love. Each with different perspectives and experiences, the film’s subjects — Brittany, Hannah, Nick and Ylonda — take us inside their worlds, their families, their souls and boldly illustrate the beauty and power of bodily autonomy. As we watch, listen and love each storyteller, we also bear witness to a chilling reality: The fundamental freedom to own our body and future has never been more uncertain than it is today.



Block 5 – BLACKLINING JUSTICE

 

  1. BETWEEN BLACK & BLUE 

Synopsis: “Between Black and Blue” is about a young man who goes to the liquor store to pick up an apple juice and skittles for his girlfriend. On his way back home, he sees

different people coming to blows with the police, re-imagining what happened to Terence Crutcher and Sandra Bland. It poses the question – what would you do in those situations?



  1. THE RAGE

Synopsis:Akmal struggles against his guiltiness, and the memories of his life with Sarah, who he lost brutally after a police control has gone wrong.

 

  1. PRIVILEGE 

Synopsis: With tension between them, two men from different backgrounds are forced to recognize their similarities of being Black in America.

 

  1. CHICKENS

Synopsis: “Chickens” examines the tragic reality Black people still face: the fear of being wrongfully murdered by the police.

  1. TRIBE (music video)

Synopsis: Singer, rapper, and poet, Akilah Divine sends a message via her music video; “Don’t you fall asleep now, you better stay woke!” Especially during these times where the social/political climate seems to be ascending daily.

        

  1. KEEP YOUR FLOWERS

Sekou Browne is a filmmaker based in Houston, Texas.  He and his wife, run a wedding and lifestyle photography company part-time. Photo-graphing love stories in his 

 

business has been his foundation,  as he fine-tunes a keen ability to capture intimate and emotional moments in films. After working as a crew member on several short 

 

films, this short is his directorial debut. Currently, he is working on several short and feature film projects and is set to serve as DP on a short film he wrote and produced entitled “Inherited.” His main goal is to write, direct and produce meaningful narrative and documentary films that intersect both his Christian faith and race.

In a small supermarket in a blue collar town, a black man smiles at a 10-year-old white boy across the checkout aisle. This innocuous moment sends two gangs into a ruthless war that ends with a shocking backlash.

Block 6 – LOVE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

  1. LOVE BITES

Synopsis: As the reality of their relationship changes, Cat struggles to reconcile with the thought of her relationship with her boyfriend Chidi coming to an end. 

 

Despite growing evidence that presents itself, Cat fights to keep the doomed relationship going. Who will be brave enough to end this bad romance?

 

 

  1. PUPPY LOVE

Synopsis:  Beetle, the typical around the way kid, has a huge crush on his favorite R&B singer “Crystal”. While listening to the radio, the DJ announces a contest that will get him up, close & personal with the singer but the only way to win the tickets is to call in. The problem is, his phone does not work. Beetle has to figure out a way to get to the love of his life in this coming of age drama about a first love experience.

 

  1. TORI

Synopsis:  A successful type A security expert has to have a home monitoring system installed, and realizes that her biggest problem maybe what happens in her own home.

 

  1. EMERALD KING

Synopsis:  Every little girl grows up to become a woman. But often the wounds of a woman’s soul keep her trapped, hindering her from living out her full potential. Emerald King has one way to deal with life’s burdens, but it’s not working. Can her friend Terry convince her that there is another way?

 

  1. HEALTHY MIND

Synopsis: Three sexually active college freshman students that face new sexual desires and experiences that come with a cost.



  1. DIGNITY

Synopsis:  A love story between a woman and her family. However, the family’s strength is tested when a moral decision must be made.

Synopsis:  A grieving grandmother searches for understanding from the imprisoned killer of her grandson. Bertha suffers from an inner conflict between her religious beliefs of forgiveness, and revenge.

Synopsis:  A true story of Doctor Ossian Sweet, an African American doctor who moves his family into an all-white segregated street in Detroit in the 1920s. The threats of mob anger, and violence are exemplified, along with their methods of survival, and their attempts to maintain their dignity.

 

  1. THE MEETING THAT SHAPED AMERIKKKA

Synopsis: A one-man film in whiteface that explores the exploitation and destruction of melanated people in Amerikkka…

 

  1. MAY DAY ON THE GREEN

Synopsis: May Day on the Green is an archival documentary about a peaceful protest, referred to as the May Day Rally, in May of 1970. May Day featured 15,000 people in support of Black Panther Party members on trial for murder charges, over 7,000 armed forces, and a large media team ready to cover the violence expected to erupt. May Day on the Green as a film focuses on the protest, but more importantly, breaks down the backstory of the trial. The ultimate goal of May Day on the Green is to show how this story is a significant piece of history that is unknown to the average American.

Block 11 – PAINTING REVOLUTIONS

  1. KINDRED SPIRITS

Synopsis: “Kindred Spirits” explores the lives and work of two accomplished but unsung African American women artists who lived and worked during the era of segregation and who developed a special bond as aunt and niece. Throughout this exploration of their art and careers, a third portrait emerges: that of a segregated Washington, D.C. where, denied the same access as their white colleagues, black artists seized educational opportunities, became prominent faculty members of African American schools, and established their own venues to exhibit and publish their work.

  1. THE FIRST RAINBOW COALITION

Synopsis: The First Rainbow Coalition charts the history and legacy of a groundbreaking multi-ethnic coalition that rocked Chicago in the 1960s. Comprised of activists from the Black Panthers, the Young Patriots (southern whites), and the Young Lords (a former Puerto Rican street gang), Chicago’s Rainbow Coalition (1969-1971) united poor blacks, whites, and Latinos to openly challenge police brutality and substandard housing in one of the most segregated cities in America. What began as a drive to achieve a voice for poor communities quickly grew into a formidable political movement, attracting the support of other disenfranchised groups and the attention of a threatened FBI and Chicago political machine.
